TOUGH SEASON FOR IBRA, BUT 4TH LEAGUE TITLE WON

WHAT HAPPENED 2005/06?

Continued to have Capello's confidence in a winning team who won their second consecutive Scudetto, and made a lot of assists especially in 2004, but to be honest this is probably Zlatan's weakest season of his career


This season is perhaps what makes Ibra's career so special. How rare it is. He has later spolied us with merciless consistency and looking back at this season now is a bit strange, especially since he has developed to be one of the most lethal strikers in modern time. Because to be honest, this is probably the weakest of his career.

 

STARTED WELL WITH ALOT OF ASSISTS

Assists in football are highly underrated, especially when reviewing offensive players performance. Zlatan has time after time expressed the importance of his own assists and in the beginning of the 2005/06-season, Ibra had made 9 assists (and 5 goals) in the first 17 games and with Juve seemingly incapable of losing, everything looked great.

 

TOUGH TIME BUT YET ANOTHER TROPHY

But everything didn't continue as hoped, we had to witness a frustrated Swede week after week missing alot of opportunities and with a highly competitive striking force (Trezeguet, Del Piero, Mutu, Zalayeta), voices emerged against Capello's constant decisions to start Z. However, since they kept winning, Zlatan was protected and once again his team was on top of the league table*, his forth league title in his first five seasons in Europe (TROPHY 6).

 

ANOTHER QUARTERFINAL IN ENGLAND

In the Champions League, he had 3 goals and 1 assist, getting to the quarterfinal where Arsenal were too strong. It was the third time in his four CL-seasons he got knocked out in the quarterfinal, something we later learned sadly was not a rare occasion.

"Against Roma I got a ball from Emerson just at the centre of the pitch, but I never took it down. I back heeled it over the Roma defender Samuel Kuffour. I hit it high and long because I saw that Roma's half of the pitch was empty, and I ran after it. I went away like an arrow and Kuffour tried to hang with me. But he didn't stand a chance, he pulled my shirt and fell, and I took the ball down on half volley, it bounced around my feet and the goal keeper, Doni, rushed out and then I shot the ball, bang, a hard shot that bombed into the goal.
